Closes 6 Nov 2021

The A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project covers the length of the A66 between the M6 junction 40 at Penrith to the A1(M) junction 53 at Scotch Corner, which is approximately 50 miles long. The project involves dualling the remaining single carriageway sections of the A66 along with
improvements at key junctions along these lengths.

The A66 plays an integral role for journeys across the north of England and connects the wider road network with surrounding communities, businesses and countryside. The route provides businesses and hauliers a direct link between the east and west coasts of England and the central belt of Scotland, connecting Leeds, Sheffield, and Norwich, with Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Why we’re consulting

A major infrastructure scheme like the A66 project requires a Development Consent Order (DCO) in order to be built, maintained and operated. As part of the planning process we’re required to consult about the proposed application for a DCO, before the application is submitted to the Planning Inspectorate. You can find out more about the planning process – click here.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek your views on the proposals. Your feedback is important and will inform our continuing development of the project before we submit our
Development Consent Order application.
