A47/A11 Thickthorn Junction Improvement Scheme

Closed 11 Jul 2019

Opened 3 Jun 2019

Overview

We're consulting on our proposals to improve the A47 / A11 Thickthorn junction.

This statutory consultation follows on from our previous consultation in March 2017 and the selection of our preferred route, which we announced in August 2017

This consultation is your opportunity to share your views on the design of the proposed scheme in advance of our application for a Development Consent Order (DCO).

A DCO is a special type of planning application, which is needed for a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP). Further information on the DCO process can be found on the National Infrastructure Planning website.

Businesses, local authorities, public bodies, road users, local residents and community groups can play an important part in the development of the scheme design.

The consultation will run for 6 weeks, from Monday 3 June to Thursday 11 July 2019.

The need for the scheme

This scheme will improve the A47 / A11 Thickthorn junction.

Thickthorn junction is an important junction for those living and working around Norwich, connecting the city with Great Yarmouth and Peterborough via King’s Lynn and Wisbech.

Studies have identified the unsuitability of the current junction layout to accommodate journeys between the A11northbound to A47 eastbound carriageways and the A47 westbound to A11 southbound carriageways.

This is predicted to worsen in future years due to the growth in both traffic and large local residential developments along the A11 corridor to the south-west of Norwich.
