Have your say
We want your views about plans to widen the A12 between junction 19 (Boreham interchange) and junction 25 (Marks Tey interchange). Inside the brochure, we’ve set out options for improvements.
Please tell us what you think about these plans by filling in the questionnaire.
The public consultation starts on 23 January and finishes on Friday 3 March.
The need for improvements on A12 between junction 19 and 25
The A12 between Chelmsford and Marks Tey is a vital transport link. Locally, it is the main commuter route to nearby towns. Nationally it is a major freight route through Essex and Suffolk, and connects Ipswich to London.
It needs major improvement for several reasons:
In places, the road is almost past its capacity. Motorists regularly experience major delays at peak times. Up to 90,000 vehicles travel between junction 19 and 25 every day. Forecasts reveal that the traffic on the A12 will exceed capacity by 2038. Congestion will increase if nothing is done to address this problem.
In the past 5 years, the junctions along this stretch of the A12 have experienced 3 fatal collisions and 12 serious accidents.
By improving the road, we can make it safer for everybody, including pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians as well as motorists.
By improving the overall traffic flow of a major route, it opens possibilities for growth, offering better access to local towns for businesses.
The 8 junctions along this section of the A12 suffer from a number of problems, including below standard slip roads and capacity problems which can result in tailbacks. As part of this consultation, we are asking you for your views on the junctions.
Your views are important

Although there will be other opportunities to comment and influence the proposals as they progress, this consultation provides a key opportunity for you to have your say on the future direction of the scheme. We will review and consider all comments received.
